The plant's stems contain high amounts of silicone and silicic acid, which help repair broken bones and form collagen, an important protein found in connective tissue, skin, bone, cartilage and ligaments. Thorn is also used to treat urinary tract infections, kidney and bladder stones, and as a topical treatment for burns and trauma.
Schizonepeta chinensis, perennial herb. Rhizome prostrate rooting, black or dark brown. Stems erect on the ground, type 2. Vegetative stems, 15-60cm high, with 6-15 ridges, emerge after the spore stem has withered. Leaves degenerate, lower part united into sheaths, teeth lanceolate, black, margins grayish white, membranous; Branches whorled, medium solid, with ridges 3-4, simple or branched. Spore stems first appear in early spring, often purplish brown, fleshy, unbranched, sheaths long and large. Sporangium panicle out in May to June, terminal, blunt, 2-3.5cm long; Sporophyll hexagonal, pelleted, spirally arranged, fringed with growth-shaped sporangia. The spores are conidia.
